Fact Spot

Did you know that umbrellas have been around for 3000 years and there are millions of them, in various sizes and shapes, in use around the world every day? Umbrella etiquette is not something we see in any school curriculum, but it could be food for thought when looking at the number of injuries caused by brolly use. In 2013, 492 Kiwis had their claims accepted for a host of injuries caused by their brollies – and it wasn’t just in the rain. There was a cut leg on a sun umbrella, while rogue umbrella spokes caused a hand cut and a poke in the eye. The wind’s effect also caused havoc, with shoulder strain injuries amongst the claims as weather-affected commuters tried to keep their gust-battered umbrellas under control.
